Prom, Parenting, and the Healing Power of Dance: Rediscovering Connection and Joy Through West Coast Swing in Utah County

When my son asked me to teach him to dance for his first prom, I was overjoyed, and reminded of my own prom night years ago. What began as a bittersweet memory became a full-circle lesson in joy, connection, and the healing power of movement.

A Prom Night Full of Surprises

Recently, my youngest son, who’s never been the social butterfly, surprised us all. He stepped up to plan his first prom, learning everything from coordination to confidence along the way.

But the moment that melted my heart was when he said, “Mom, will you teach me how to dance?”

As someone whose life has been shaped by movement, I couldn’t have been happier. Still, part of me wondered, what does prom dancing even look like these days?

Would the kids even partner dance?

Memories of My Own Prom

As we practiced in the kitchen, memories of my own senior prom came rushing back.

Back then, I’d always loved to dance, it was my way of expressing joy, grounding my emotions, and connecting to something deeper. But my high school boyfriend didn’t share that same love. When we broke up the week of prom, I assumed I’d be staying home.

Until fate (and dance) stepped in.

That same week, I decided to go to a country dance just to get out of the house. I met someone there who loved to dance as much as I did, and the next day, the day before prom, he asked me to go with him.

I couldn’t believe it. I was going to prom after all.

The Night Dance Changed Everything

Even though I barely knew my date, I knew one thing: he could dance.

We spent the night gliding through two-step, swing, and waltz. The music, laughter, and movement washed away every bit of disappointment I had felt just days before.

What started as heartbreak turned into a night I’d never forget, a night that reminded me that life, just like dance, is about rhythm, resilience, and flow.

Sometimes what feels like an ending is just the start of something beautiful.

That’s when I learned one of life’s most powerful truths: dance has a way of healing the heart and bringing us back to joy.

Dancing with My Son: Full Circle Moments

Now, years later, I find myself on the other side of that story, teaching my son his first slow dance.

As we practiced, I saw something familiar in his smile, that same light I felt as a teen rediscovering my joy through movement.

These moments remind me that dance isn’t just about steps or technique; it’s about connection. It’s how we learn to communicate without words, how we express love, and how we stay present in our bodies, even in life’s chaos.

And just like that, what started as “teaching him for prom” became a shared experience of laughter, rhythm, and presence, a small but sacred reminder that joy really does live in the simple things.

Movement: A Path to Calm and Healing

Life can feel overwhelming at times. Between responsibilities, emotions, and everything in between, our nervous systems are constantly working overtime.

But movement, especially intentional, mindful movement, helps us come back to balance. It’s one of the simplest ways to regulate the nervous system and shift from stress to serenity.

Whether it’s a song in your kitchen or a dance floor in Mapleton, UT, your body remembers how to find peace through rhythm.

Three Simple Ways to Calm Your Nervous System (and Find Joy Again)

Here are three tools I’ve leaned on throughout my own healing journey, and that I now share with my students at Dance to Uplift:

  1. Breathe Intentionally: Start with 2 counts in, 6 counts out. Repeat a few times. As you exhale, imagine releasing stress, tension, or anxiety. Breathwork is a gentle invitation for your body to feel safe again.

  2. Move with Meaning: You don’t need a studio. Just stand, stretch, or sway to music that makes you feel something. Movement awakens energy, reconnects you to your body, and quiets racing thoughts.

  3. Smile, Even When It Feels Hard: Your body doesn’t know the difference between a forced smile and a real one; both trigger happy hormones.Try it while dancing, walking, or just breathing, it truly shifts your mood.

Dance Is Connection, through Every Season

Watching my son prepare for prom reminded me that connection isn’t something we outgrow, it just changes shape.

Sometimes it’s between partners on a dance floor.

Sometimes it’s between a mother and son in the kitchen.

And sometimes, it’s between you and the music that moves your soul.

Even in life’s uncertain rhythms, there’s always a reason to keep dancing, to stay open, to stay joyful, to stay connected.

So wherever you are on your journey, healing, growing, rediscovering, remember: movement is medicine, and joy is your birthright.

Final Thoughts

Life has a way of surprising us with unexpected gifts, just like that prom invitation years ago, or my son asking me to teach him to dance.
