If you’ve ever thought, “I’d love to learn to dance, but I’m too old to start now”, I have good news—you are never too old to begin.
In fact, West Coast Swing might be the perfect place to start.
At Dance to Uplift in Springville, Utah County, I offer adult dance classes designed especially for women over 40, empty nesters, and couples looking to reconnect. These aren’t just dance classes. They’re joyful, welcoming spaces where you can rediscover your body, meet new people, and leave each week feeling lighter than when you walked in.
How West Coast Swing Became My Healing Dance
Throughout my childhood, until the age of 12, I experienced sexual, Satanic Ritual Abuse (SRA), physical, emotional, being used for child pornography, and spiritual abuse. Dance became my escape, my way to stay connected with myself, God, and those around me.
In 1997, I joined a country dance team at Utah Valley University. This was the first time I found herself at a UCWDC (United Country Western Dance Circuit) event, where I fell in love with West Coast Swing. All night long, I would watch the pros in the ‘swing’ room and could not find a way to leave the dance floor. At that moment, I knew this was the dance for me. It stole my heart.
West Coast Swing became more than a hobby. It became my therapy, my community, and my way back to joy. That’s why I now teach it in my Move with Meaning series—to give others the same gift it gave me.
What Makes West Coast Swing Special?
Unlike some ballroom dances that are rigid in style, West Coast Swing is known for its creativity and versatility. You can dance it to blues, country, R&B, jazz, pop—basically any music you love.
It’s also social. At West Coast Swing dances, you rotate partners often, which makes it easier to meet people and feel part of a community.
And it’s accessible. You don’t need a background in dance to get started. With the right instruction and encouragement, you can feel confident on the dance floor in just a few weeks.
