Why I Created UPLIFT: A Place Where Every Step Is a Chance to Connect

Have you ever walked into a space and just felt it?
Not because everything looked perfect.
Not because everyone was the same.
But because there was something real there. Something alive. Something connecting people beyond surface level.
That is what dance has always been for me.
And it is exactly why I created UPLIFT.
Dance Has Always Been My Place of Connection
For as long as I can remember, dance has been more than movement.
It has been a place where I come home to myself.
A place where I connect with others in a way that words cannot quite reach.
And for me, it has also been a place where I feel deeply connected to God.
There is something about stepping onto the dance floor, taking a breath, and allowing yourself to be present in the moment. Feeling the music move through your body. Feeling the subtle communication between you and your partner.
It becomes more than steps.
It becomes connection.
And in that connection, there is something incredibly uplifting.
Not in a surface-level way. Not in a forced positivity kind of way.
But in a grounded, embodied, real kind of way.
The kind that reminds you who you are.
The kind that brings you back when life feels overwhelming or disconnected.
That is what dance has given me over the years.
And it is something I have always wanted to share.
The Reality of Dancing in Utah County
If you live here, you understand this.
Utah County has not always had many places for West Coast Swing.
For over 25 years, I have driven to Salt Lake City to find that connection on the dance floor.
And I have loved those experiences. They shaped me. They gave me community. They helped me grow.
But there was always this feeling in me.
A quiet knowing.
That something was missing closer to home.
I started to feel this pull to create something here.
Not just a place to dance.
But a place where people could truly connect.
A place where someone could walk in and feel like they belong, no matter where they are in their journey.
A place that meets people where they are.
Because the truth is, not everyone walks into dance for the same reason.
What Community Really Means
Something someone said to me recently stayed with me.
They said community is not about everyone conforming to the same idea of what it should be.
It is about creating space for all the different needs, wants, and priorities people bring with them.
That shifted something in me.
Because if we are being honest, it is easy to feel comfortable around people who think like us.
People who dance like us.
People who value the same things we do.
But growth does not happen in comfort alone.
Growth happens when we are willing to expand.
To listen.
To be open to perspectives that are different from our own.
And sometimes, that can feel uncomfortable.
The Many Reasons People Come to Dance
One of the things I love most about West Coast Swing is how many different people it brings together.
On any given night, you will find:
People who are there purely for social dancing. They want to move, connect, and enjoy the moment.
People who are focused on competition. They are driven, working toward goals, chasing points, refining their craft.
People who love routines. They enjoy structure, creativity, and performance.
People who just want to feel connection with their partner. Nothing more, nothing less.
People who are looking for friendship. For community. For a place to belong.
People who might even be hoping to meet someone.
And yes, people who just want something fun to do on a Friday night.
All of these reasons are valid.
All of them matter.
And all of them deserve a place.
Creating a Space That Holds All of It
When I created UPLIFT, I knew I did not want it to be just one thing.
I did not want it to only serve one type of dancer.
Because that is not real life.
And that is not how true community is built.
I wanted to create a space where all of those people could come together.
Where the social dancer and the competitor share the same floor.
Where the beginner feels just as welcome as the advanced dancer.
Where someone can come to connect deeply, while someone else comes to simply have fun.
Because there is something powerful that happens when all of those energies exist in the same space.
We learn from each other.
We expand.
We grow.
When Differences Feel Uncomfortable
I will be honest.
There are moments when this is not easy.
Moments when someone’s “why” for dancing feels very different from mine.
Moments when I feel that internal resistance.
And in those moments, I have had to learn to pause and ask myself a different question.
Instead of asking, " Why do they do it that way?
I ask, what can I learn from this?
Was there a time in my life when this mattered to me?
Can I see their perspective without changing my own?
This has been such a powerful practice for me.
Because it shifts me from judgment to curiosity.
And curiosity is where connection begins.
Growth Does Not Happen in Sameness
If we only surround ourselves with people who think like us, move like us, and see the world like us, we stay in a very small version of ourselves.
But when we allow ourselves to be around difference, something opens.
We begin to see new possibilities.
We expand our understanding.
We deepen our capacity for connection.
And yes, sometimes it feels uncomfortable.
But that discomfort is often where the growth is.
Dance as a Reflection of Life
This is one of the reasons I love West Coast Swing so much.
It mirrors life in such a real way.
In dance, you are constantly navigating:
Connection and independence
Listening and expressing
Leading and following
Structure and creativity
And you are doing it with another person who brings their own experiences, their own energy, their own perspective.
You cannot control everything.
You have to adapt.
You have to listen.
You have to stay present.
And when you do, something beautiful happens.
A Personal Thank You
When I reflect on my journey, I feel so much gratitude.
To every single person I have met on the dance floor.
To the people who challenged me.
To the people who supported me.
To the ones who made me uncomfortable in ways that helped me grow.
To the ones who shared laughter, connection, and moments I will never forget.
Each of you has been part of this journey.
Each of you has shaped me into the dancer, teacher, and person I am today.
And that is something I will never take for granted.
Why UPLIFT Matters
UPLIFT is not just a dance.
It is not just an event.
It is not just a place to learn West Coast Swing.
It is a space where connection is the foundation.
Where you can come as you are.
Where your reason for being there is enough.
Where every step is an opportunity to connect.
To grow.
To feel.
To be present.
And ultimately, to uplift.
For the Woman Looking for More
If you are reading this and you feel like something is missing in your life…
If you are craving connection.
If you are looking for something that brings you back to yourself.
If you want to feel again. Move again. connect again.
I want you to know there is a place for you here.
You do not need to have experience.
You do not need to know the steps.
You just need to be willing to show up.
Because this is not about being perfect.
It is about being present.
A Place Where You Can Breathe, Move, and Connect
Through UPLIFT, through my classes, through everything I create inside Dance to Uplift, my intention is simple.
To create spaces where people can:
Breathe
Move
Connect
Grow
In a way that feels real.
In a way that feels supportive.
In a way that allows you to come back to yourself.
Every Step Is a Chance to UPLIFT
This is something I believe deeply.
Not just on the dance floor.
But in life.
Every step you take.
Every interaction you have.
Every moment you choose presence over distraction.
It is an opportunity.
An opportunity to connect.
An opportunity to grow.
An opportunity to uplift yourself and those around you.
Final Thought
If there is one thing I hope you take from this, it is this.
There is not one “right” way to dance.
There is not one “right” reason to be here.
There is not one “right” path.
There is only your path.
And when you allow yourself to honor that, while also making space for others to honor theirs, something really beautiful happens.
That is where true community lives.
And that is what UPLIFT is all about.
Live in Love. Move with Meaning. Play Passionately.
